Conclusion and Evaluation

I finished the first part of my internship, which focused on inside internship, at the UP Main Library during the first semester of AY 2016-2017. I took the second part of my internship this midyear, which focused this time on outside internship. I was supposed to graduate last June were not for this last requirement of the course. This requirement was left out because I enrolled only 15 units in the first semester of AY 2014-2015, as well as the first semester AY 2015-2016. Also, we did not have sufficient money to enroll for midyear 2015-2016.

Initially, I was supposed to apply for internship at UPD Vargas Museum with SEAMEO INNOTECH as a fallback option. However, an internship slot suddenly become available at the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Archives. I thought the ADMU Archives will be a better choice because of their extensive collections. Thus, I chose ADMU and thank God because its director, Ms. Carina C. Samaniego, accepted my application for internship there.

My internship at the ADMU Archives focused on their CD labeling project, which was assigned to me. The work for this project were divided into five tasks: writing front cover labels, pasting it on the front cover, writing spine labels, pasting it on the spine, and shelving.

When writing labels, I based the information on the labels from the Ateneo de Manila University Archives database, which is located at http://univarchives.ateneo.edu/dbase/. I wrote the labels in this format:

SURNAME, GIVEN NAME
Title [/ All the authors' names if at least two authors]
Degree Program [It actually means "subject."]
Year

After writing, I printed the front cover labels and pasted each of them on every CD (each subject have multiple CDs). Then, I wrote spine labels in this format:

SURNAME, NAME INITIALS     DEGREE PROGRAM     YEAR

Once I have printed the spine labels, I pasted each of them on every CD spine in an inverted position so that once an archives staff browses the CD, the staff will be able to readily see the CD spine. In addition, once the staff look at the CD spine, he/she can easily see the CD front cover instead of flipping the CD just to see the front cover. Finally, I shelved the CDs into a metal container where I arranged them by degree program followed by name (surname first) and then year.

I finished the CD labeling project ahead of schedule. Thus, I spent my remaining internship time through picture indexing on Blue Book yearbooks. I index names on each photo if the person is easily identified. I did all these until I completed the prescribed number of hours of my internship. This work was usually done by Ateneans who are performing community service as a result of various violations such as late ID application and/or validation, improper parking, and other minor delinquencies. I am glad an archives staff gave me this additional task so that I can finish my internship on time.

At the start, the ADMU Archives staff told me that I must finish the CD labeling project on time. I was told that the intern before me was not able to finish the project. So I focused on the job and exerted my best effort. My effort was rewarded when the project was finally completed ahead of time. The ADMU Archives staff praised me for my dedication and good work on that project compared with the performance of my predecessor.

The staff are very pleasant to work with. I think they like me so much because sometimes they share their personal problems such as the relationships within their family. One staff even told me about their property lawsuit. From June 16 to June 19, I and my family were on vacation in Cebu. Needless to say that I was absent for three working days. Of course, I sought in advance permission to be absent for the said dates. I am also absent from work on July 8 to take some rest at home. Every working day, I commuted from the UP academic oval to the Ateneo de Manila University. I rode the jeepney plying the Kalayaan-UP route. The long queue and waiting time before the jeepney arrives always annoys me. Truly, my fear of being late for work stresses me so much.

The supervisor, Ms. Carina C. Samaniego, is well-liked because she is a very kind person. She is very productive and always busy at work. Ms. Samaniego is a practicing Catholic and a good Christian. She holds the overall responsibility for managing the ADMU Archives.

The environment inside and outside the ADMU Archives is generally good. It has an eating area/pantry which is comfortable and equipped with a microwave oven and a refrigerator. However, it is located besides the archival storage room, which is not advisable because the leftover food and crumbs might attract pests such as insects and vermin. Also, the cleanliness at the opposite side of the walkway facing the monument is not always well maintained.

Overall, my internship is very educational and professional. I will miss the archives staff of the Ateneo de Manila University Archives. As an Archives major, I have no plan to become a librarian, but yes, I would love to be an archivist.

In the meantime, I am passionately engaged in my genealogy project, that is, tracing the roots of my clan as far back as surviving records will permit. Someday, I would like to become a professional genealogist since there are only a few Filipino professional genealogists around. Upon my graduation, I look forward to finding a job that will best fit my skills and personality. So happy job hunting everyone. I will see you around. Thank you very much UPD and ADMU!
