Generalization

LIS 181 internship at the UP Main Library engaged me to a lot of activities. In this semester, I experienced many things within my 150 hours of internship. I started my internship on August 17 and ended on October 5, although my homework in cataloging was not done until December 12. It was exhausting, but I gained a lot of experience. I learned a lot from the prerequisite courses such as cataloging, indexing, etc.

I praised the hard work of the staff and the good flow of service. However, I observed the long backlog of materials to be processed especially in the Serials Section. I also noticed that some equipment were already obsolete especially in the Bindery Section. The unavailability of persons-in-charge is also a problem especially if only a few staff reported for work and student assistants and trainees are unavailable for work. Thus, the long service queue perpetuates the moniker University of Pila for our dear university. Truly, the UP Main Library system must make a room for improvements in its services to better serve its clientele.

LIS 181, which is the outside internship, will be a new journey for me as my graduation approaches.

Homework

After finally finishing my 150 hours of internship, I still had one more requirement to fulfill and that is LIS 181: a homework in cataloging. I waited for a message from ma'am Annie regarding that until November. I even personally went to the Cataloging and Metadata Services Section to see her. Unfortunately, she was on personal leave at the time. Finally, on December 6, Brainard Linco and I met ma'am Annie for the homework. She oriented us on how to edit the catalog of an item. Then, she gave us a homework.

On December 12, after answering the homework, we went back there along with Czar Burgos, Miko Padulla, and Gillian Reyes to discuss the homework. Once finalized, I submitted the homework to ma'am Annie. That finally concludes my internship.

October 3, 2016

At 8:00 AM, I resumed my duty at Filipiniana Books Section. I paged 9 titles, shelved 192 books, and bibliographically searched 65 titles. I finally finished there at 11:30 AM. That completed my OJT hours.

But, I have a homework to do at the Cataloging and Metadata Services Section before submitting the remaining requirements.

But, I resumed for the last time at 1:00 PM where I finished sorting Boxes 125, 126, and some parts of 132 by 4:00 PM. That ended my duty at the University Archives.

After that, I consulted with my coordinator for twenty minutes before leaving my duty.

So, I was referred to the Information Services and Instruction Section. I entered there at 9:05 AM, After orientation, I started my duty at 9:50 AM by manning the Internet Counter. At 1:50 PM, I finished that part and I starting shelving and shelf-reading resources. I finished at 3:50 PM. So, I had a 5-minute break. At 3:55 PM, I started answering queries. While doing that, I signed up at Screencast to make a 1-2 minute video on Database/Library resources tutorial. I ended abriuptly at 5:55 PM.

Because of that, I exceeded time in Reference Service section by almost two hours. I ended at 10:20 AM. I was supposed to start at Technical Service shortly after, however the head was attending the book fair at that time.

I was not able to come in on time because I had to accomplish my concept paper for LIS 199. After consultation, I was able to come in at 2:15 PM. Since my reference service was almost done, I was oriented with scanning at the Filipiniana Section. Shortly after that, I started scanning documents ("The Forest School Catalogue 1916-1917 Announcement 1917-1918" and "College of Liberal Arts Catalogue 1916-1917 Announcement 1917-1918" for example). However, I was not able to finish scanning the second book by 5:00 PM.

By that, I was oriented first before immediately conducting references services such as lending services, all of which are theses and dissertations. In addition to that, I was asked to count the number of users and resources used at the University Archives and Record Depository for August 2016. I ended at 5:00 PM.

Before the first day of my on-the-job training, I attended an orientation the day before (supposedly last August 15, but to class suspensions it moved to the following day).

At 8:00 AM today, I started my OJT for LIS 181 internship at UP Main Library. I decided to select my first section at Catalog and Metadata Services Section. Although the head librarian Ma'am Annie Cruz Lim was not there, she told her assistant via Facebook chat about the task for me and for my groupmate Adrian Luna by organizing catalog cards and put them in filing cabinets. We left at 12:00 noon for lunch break. At 1:00 PM, I returned back to do the same task. However, Adrian did not come back. So, I worked alone. I finished at 5:00 PM. So, I accumulated 8 hours of OJT in that section.
